Salvos Kids in the Kitchen ONLINE

Salvos Kids in the Kitchen is a hands on cooking program designed to teach kids (8-12 years old) how to cook simple meals for themselves and their families.

The program was started in Cowra, NSW in 2017 and expanded in 2018 with resources made available to any Salvation Army Corps/Centre wanting to run it. Since then the program has run in more than 20 other locations.

At the beginning of 2020, the program in Cowra was cut short because of restrictions due to COVID-19. Resources for the remaining 3 weeks were packaged and delivered to the kids so they could do it at home.

If I had the time and resources, I would have videoed the demonstration so that the kids were able to watch it at home and then try it for themselves.

In essence, this idea would take the existing program and produce (quality) demonstration videos that could be viewed at home (or by other groups running in the program when needed). Small schools may also benefit from this as it fits in with aspects of the current curriculum.

Physical resources (recipe cards, badges, aprons, etc. could be ordered by individuals/families and posted out after some kind of registration and prior to starting.

By developing this all ready successful program, more kids and their families could benefit and could potentially be linked into local Corps.

Love this idea. As rural chaplains would love to be able to encourage families in rural and remote locations to do this program. It would provide a great connection platform for us to continue ministry with families.

Great idea. In our house, my wife does most of the cooking. We've not been good at getting our children to learn. This sounds like a great step.

To promote the concept, you might partner with local schools through the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation - see https://www.kitchengardenfoundation.org.au/ Though they have done something similar to what you are proposing (see https://www.kitchengardenfoundation.org.au/co...ram-home-coles), you might be able to help them take the idea further.

PS Cathryn - my idea is about Benefit concerts that pay artists, encourage food purchases and raise funds for The Salvation Army. If you like the idea please vote/feedback by clicking here: https://ideas.salvationarmy.org.au/post/1981171

Having watched this from inception through Facebook posts and seeing the attention to detail; the application and the ministry outcomes, It would be inconceivable if this idea does not get adopted in various location - both rural and city.

What an awesome idea for both Corps and Social Mission Expressions. Be great to see if we could get a Celeb Chef involved

I think this is a great idea and should also be copied into the Challenge for Engaging Children in a Digital World.
