You are not alone - We are here to help

UPDATE: 24.04.20

The Pitch Panel believes that this concept requires further clarification, project planning and research. The Ideas Development Grant will remain open to a further request for funding once greater clarity has been established.

Many Chinese migrants feel helpless and isolated because they are unable to communicate effectively in English. When they experience life challenges, they are not sure where to seek help and advice, relying on their limited capacity to deal with difficulties. This isolation and disconnection cause distress, anguish and hardship. It is the very essence of social injustice.

The ‘Chinese Language Platform’ is a gateway for the Chinese Community to access The Salvation Army’s services and resources in their language. ‘The Platform’ is both an online communication platform and phone helpline for Mandarin and Cantonese speakers. When they call in The Salvation Army helpline or leave a text message, someone who speaks their language will understand their needs and advise on the range of emergency relief and other support available. Volunteers from different sectors with bilingual skills will be recruited and trained to offer assistance. This is an opportunity to provide care via a listening ear to vulnerable people from culturally diverse Chinese backgrounds and becoming their trusted resource, and also empower individuals to contribute and grow. By offering hope and encouragement, this will create opportunities for further engagement with mission expressions.

Everyone in the community should have an equal access to help, advocacy and resources. The Multicultural Community can find a sense of belonging and safety through our compassionate support towards them.

What department are you from?

Public Relations, Mission Support, Community Engagement

Who is your target market?

Starting with the Chinese Community as a pilot model, this IDEA has potential to scale up to include other Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) communities.

A fabulous idea Leanne! So great to see it up here!

Like the idea but it's view is limited. There are other non-English speaking communities who could benefit from the idea

Reply

Fay Foster 8 months ago

True. It's a great idea that could be adapted for other language groups.

Great idea, Leanne.

Connecting with migrants who feel disconnected is a wonderful thing.

Where we used to live, I would see Chinese grandparents who seemed to have been asked to come to Australia by their migrant children to care for the grandchildren. They appeared to have little/no English and seemed disconnected from the rest of our society.

My mother-in-law from Argentina lived with us for a couple of years a few years ago. One thing that was a great help to her was taking part in English language classes run by a local church. It meant that she got to learn (something of) the language and to socialise with other people feeling as foreign as she did. The classes were run by volunteers and (as I understand) had a time to study the Bible. (Am sure you've come across this model of ministry before but thought it worthwhile to share here).

If you have not already, it may be helpful to review, what other Chinese and CALD ministries are doing in other denominations, to iterate/pivot your idea.

This idea holds a lot of promise for the communities involved. It will also benefit our ongoing relationship with the Chinese community and other nationalities as this concept is developed. A great deal of scope in what is a basically grass roots concept with real potential.

I feel depression and anxiety illness would be higher as a percentile amongst Mandarin & Cantonese speakers than many other language backgrounds due to family pressures to achieve and the tendency for migrants from China and HK to reside in suburbs with other speakers of their language. This impacts social adaption and inclusion into other cultural groups in Australia and causes an over reliance on speaking to family and friends only within those geographical communities which may not be beneficial. There needs to be more social interaction with third parties. I think GLBTQI Mandarin speakers are particularly at risk

Fay Foster 8 months ago

Great idea. Maybe users of this service could also be offered English language classes in the hope that this would lessen the users' disadvantage in the future.

Very good idea as languages are vital to new migrants who want to well participate into Australia for good.

Huang

We are not one, we are many!

For those Chinese who cannot speak English are very difficult when they are in troubles. For many years, Salvation Army have been working very hard to work with Chinese background. Salvation Army Australia are very high reputation working for those homeless, family violence and those who cannot be out off their troubles. It provides professional help for who is in need. It is our good luck for our Chinese if it is successful to set up a platform on which we can help one another and can be understood well, support well. I hope more Chinese need to pay more attention to it, support it! Thanks

Its always not easy for new migrants to settle in a new country. Its even harder for those who have language barrier and this create more difficulties in community integration. Many Chinese turn to their circle of friends for help as they do not aware the resources available. Some may keep problems within themselves as they do not want to disclose their struggles to their friends. This platform will be very helpful for people in need. Someone they can trust is willing to listen and understand their problems.

Dear Adam,
My name is Evonne Chen and I am a Chinese channel YouTuber. I promoted this idea to my viewers recently in a video with over 900 views in three days. I have attached the video link below if you would like to see it. Many other friends and family have promoted this idea in many social platforms so it is not a surprise that there is such an increase in votes. This is an incredibly precious opportunity for the Asian community and I would appreciate it if you could show some respect towards the program. If it were not for the language boundaries, there would be even more votes. My link :https://youtu.be/_dcp_nYkPSI

Dear Adam, I had been joining Salvation Army in Richmond which most people's background are Chinese. I myself saw how Salvation Amy helped those who can not speak English, struggling with difficulties. The reputation of Salvation Army made me to try my best to help others . Therefore, I forwarded the links to those who I know they are needing helps.
It is reported that Chinese new migrants are over 25 millions in Australia. If they all vote it, that's the best support for Salvation Army. It is still pity, most of them have no chance to see it, meanwhile, some others cannot speak English. Therefore, I don't think it is fake vote. However, I strongly recommend to be investigated for the issue.

An inspirational idea with the potential to touch the lives of many in our community who are lonely, isolated and feel vulnerable. Leanne has a true heart to reach out to the Chinese community, and I applaud her efforts to make a real difference in people's lives and impact positively on their mental health and well being. Good one Leanne!
