Mission Retail Project - bringing the church into retail

The front door to The Salvation Army for most Australians is the retail locations of our Salvo stores/Family stores/Thrift stores network. The challenge is that the brand is not represented holistically in these locations and the fullness of the mission is not able to be accessed - the ability to engage in community, to explore faith, and to find help. The Mission Retail project is looking to create a more holistic Salvation Army within the context of our retail footprint.

The Mission Retail project will trial locations in two locations - a rural store setting (Wagga Wagga NSW) and a suburban city location (Panania NSW).

The mission refurbishment will include -
1. A Cafe Community area where people can come together to connect and be known.
2. A 'Spiritual zone' (yet to be named) where faith can be explored in diverse ways.
3. A Town Hall space where the shape and needs of the community are storied and discussed, and people invited to engage in making a difference. It will also promote groups where people can come and find community.

The project will see the employment of two new roles, Mission Director and Café Manager. It will also include the opportunity for volunteering in new mission contexts.

The trial stores are scheduled to open early 2020.

This project is a work in progress and has had several years of engagement from various contributors within the movement, but we are looking for your votes to assure us we are on the right track and your comments to help us shape this exciting future.

We are really interested in ideas around what we could do in the 'spiritual zone' space within the store. This needs to be a space of inclusion with diverse opportunities for people to explore Christian spirituality.

This sounds like a great way to further embed the Salvos into the community. The spaces you have outlined open up the Salvos Stores to be not only about the thrifty shopper but also inclusive for those who are seeking community. I particularly love that people with skills, like baristas, chefs, etc. can now volunteer their skills to the Salvos in a way they previously could not.

I seriously love this idea. Would love to see this expand around Australia. There are many Corps with Family Stores who have a heart to make this a more 'missional' space!

This creative missional approach could be called SUIT, SOAP AND SALVATION!
You could establish a prayer station, with a prayer request form and prayer box. Maybe there could be a cubicle (similar to a change cubicle), where a Christian could be available to pray with people -devotional music to mask voices.
In place of fortune cookies, how about blessing cookies.
What about s Kid's Corner?
Promote a culture of "Pay it Forward"', and include a Blessings collection point.
Most importantly, know your demographic, be relevant and find the need and meet it.
