UPDATE: 24.02.20

Innovation team will support the in-store trail – Idea development grant funding $12,000 and continue to support the on-going journey.

Second Chance firstly is an innovation that disrupts the current donation of second hand clothes in two ways.
Firstly by delivering oversize Laundry bags to the front doors of affluent areas and inviting the residents to fill the bag with high quality clothing and leave the bag at their front door for collection the following week. Trial results proved a 46% collection rate.
The second campaign involved elite Private Schools where a short assembly talk was given and the bags sent home with the students, who returned them filled with high quality clothes the following Monday. Trial results of over 80% were achieved.

Second Chance is then about creating an online ecommerce site that enables a higher sale price than traditional second hand retail stores (Family, Salvo stores) can achieve. The clothes are modelled by people The Salvation Army works with (refugees, people living rough, youth at risk, etc) who will tell their stories. This enables engagement of the purchaser not only with the desired clothing but the purpose of purchase. When the clothes are shipped they will also include a thank you and story. This separates Second Chance out from the usual retail fashion sites.

Thirdly, Second Chance is about creating a new clothing line called - Repurposed. These clothes will be second hand clothing that has been altered through either screen printing, sewing, redesigning activity. They will carry positive messaging (love, hope, faith etc). These clothes will become one of a kind and again modelled by real people the Salvos help.

Second Chance will attract a younger audience to the Salvo brand and mission.

Hi,
I went to the presentation at Kambala Girl's School and the response was amazing. I couldn't believe how attentive the girl's were to the two speeches that the Salvos gave and their response the following week proved how big an impact the talk had on the girls. My understanding is that around 600 bags of excellent clothes came back to the school for pick up from the Salvos so the girls went home and got their parents and siblings involved... Great idea; great cut-through. The Salvos are onto a winner here!

This is a great idea and addresses the inconvenience of taking bags of clothes to local charity bins which can see closets fill up with unworn items purely because people don't have the time or a bin is not locally located to drop off their unwanted, high quality clothes. It also brings the Salvos into the online retail space.

I love this concept. The opportunity is there, as long as the logisitcs are simple to manage this has HUGE potential in an online buying market. Where will the clothes be sold online? Would our own platform be created or would it be sold through an existing one?

Hi Jason,
currently the better-quality clothes are being sold on a variety of online clothes retailers that specialise in second-hand items and clothes with a plan to combine that with a stand-alone platform powered by the Salvos (but with a view to be a bit more upmarket). We're also having early stage conversations with a major online retailer that loves what we're doing... The future looks very exciting on this one!

Hi Michael, there is a big opportunity here for Salvos. We've started listing donated fashion items online through our eCommerce channels which is being received positively from the public. We're also piloting a program with a large online retailer and Australia Post to make it easier for people to donate using the packaging from their online orders. Would love to connect and find out more about where you're at on this!

Great idea. Some charities already provide this service in some states and it does make donating more convenient. It would be worth speaking to the schools engagement reps that TSA have in Vic, WA, & Tas because they will often facilitate this sort of engagement already, especially coming into Christmas season (where it can also take the form of food or toy donations.

I think this is an awesome idea, and can create another option for people to recirculate perfectly good clothing.

Great idea. Could also 'specialise' in providing interview suitable clothing, employment ready clothing, formal wear for year 12 graduations and suitable wedding clothing etc

This reminds me of the old days with the bags that were sent around - my mum used to get them when I was a kid and we also got them at school, great idea to bring it back and with the added new dimensions!

Salvos Stores already have an online ebay store. Perhaps it would be worth taking to Lucas Ferrier to see what is already being done. @lucasferrier
